Warhammer Fantasy: Painting Dark Elves

You can’t kill Warhammer Fantasy Battles. We still get orders for old school, regiment style, WHFB armies.

Here are some Dark Elves we did recently. I adore purple on minis (its like blue, but evil). This army was a treat to see all lined up. GW’s Cold Ones my favorite minis in this army; they’re not purple but they’re fantastic designs.

Paintedfigs is a commission miniature painting service. You can send us your figurines to paint, and we also have painted miniatures for sale. We paint mainly Games Workshop (Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Age of Sigmar, Necromunda, Space Hulk, Bloodbowl, and so on), Star Wars, Warmachine and Hordes, and pretty much every Kickstarter and board game under the sun.

And we do so at the lowest rates on Earth (we’ve checked).

40k: Some Primaris Space Marines Miniature Painting

We have the good fortune to be working on a VERY large primaris Space Marine army. They’re Blood Angels, or rather ‘not-Blood Angels’ - a BA army painted with a scheme inspired by the Sanguinary Guard.

Here are some pictures of the painted Primaris. These were painted to Exhibition Quality.

Age of Sigmar: Painting Some Fyreslayers Miniatures

We got a force of these in recently. We’ve done Fyreslayers here and there before, but most Dwarfs we do these days are the Kharadron Overlords. This was the first proper Fyreslayers order I can recall us doing — and it came with a Magmadroth!

These Age of Sigmar miniatures were painted to Standard quality but the Magmadroth was done at Exhibition.

Painting Necromunda

Necromunda (and Mordheim) are my favorite GW games. Mordheim because it’s awesome (and always lives in the dark places of the world and our hearts). Necromunda, because I would try to play it like Mordheim (and lose horribly, but playing Redemptionists is about the journey…).

I was quite pleased when GW (finally) rebooted it, and still happier when I saw:

  • the detailed and warband appropriate designs

  • that they were just $40 for a set

I’ve got most of them; the Goliaths are so OTT they go full circle and become cool. The Delaques are terrifying. The Eschers are the meanest and classiest women in 40k.

And then, there are the Orlocks. Sigh.

Here are some Goliaths and Eschers painting to Exhibition Quality.

Some Painted Aeronautica Imperialis

So we got some of the plastic, Aeronautica Imperialis minis in recently.

The first thing that hits you when you build these kits is that they are quite complicated. Note I said complicated and not detailed; I’m talking about the assembly. These seem very much designed by chaps used to working with larger scales. For this scale though (6mm, or 1:285), it’s fairly tedious.

In terms of detail however, the minis are exceptional (that may be the trade off). There’s a lot of attention you don’t normally see at this scale. However I don’t feel it makes the minis busy - it makes them delightful. The Ork minis steal the show and you can see why here:

The miniature painting service level on these was Showcase.

Death Guard Plague Marines and Nurgle Daemons

The new death guard models are full of life, character, and color. They’re a delight to paint - here are some we’ve been doing for one client, adding miniatures as new ones come out (and as stores can actually supply them).

The trick with plague marines is making sure the off-green is the same across all models, but to have nuances for the daemons - and then keep THOSE consistent. We find the best way is to create painted swatches and keep them filed away. That way, even when paints change, we can still see what the final tone should look like.

The miniature painting service level on these was Standard, Showcase, and Exhibition.

Painting Blackstone Fortress: Escalation

I rather like the models from Blackstone Fortress; they are distinctive, detailed, and a little disturbing. This move towards figures with stronger character is an encouraging shift for 40k miniatures. They’ve been at it for some time now, and whoever is responsible is being listened to :) .

The new figures that come with the Blackstone Fortress Escalation expansion are particularly charming. We won a painting commission to work on the set, along with a Traitor Command and an Ambull.

Here is what we did. The miniature painting service level on these was Exhibition.

A Painted Troggoth Army

Troggoths! These are a weird and charming group of minis. The miniature painting was straight forward, but we had to take extra care with filling in seams with these large pieces.

These Age of Sigmar miniatures were painted to standard quality.

Oh My Omnissiah! Some Adeptus Mechanicus Miniature Painting

Sometimes we get asked to work on a color scheme or style which rather stands out in my mind. That happened here with these Adeptus Mechanicus miniatures; the weathering was different from how we would normally do it, and I think it worked well with the Mars tones.

I'm going to use this on my own miniatures: I think I will try it on Necromunda Goliaths.

These miniatures were painted at all three of our quality levels.

Some Painted Dark Elves / Daughters of Khaine

So we painted some Daughters of Khaine not too long ago. They’re quite a fiddly army, but less for the miniature painting than the assembly. You have to be careful or you’ll end up with a lot of gaps and ill-fitting heads.

These have excellent fleshtone sculpting but that can catch you off guard when you get to the washing and shading (especially on the WItch Aelves / Elves especially).

These were painted to Showcase quality.

Dungeons & Dragons painted figures

Dwarves, Elves, Barbarians, Rangers, Wizards, Paladins, Tolls, Orcs and Demons are all fantastical creatures but what is Dungeons and Dragons without the Dragons?

Here are some beautiful pieces brought to life by our talented miniature painters.

GW's New Slaanesh Daemons, Painted

A long-time client sent us these awesome Slaanesh Daemon figs recently. I’m very pleased with the care and thought GW put into the new sculpts. The Keeper of Secrets / Shalaxi Helbane even walks like a runway model.

These were painted to Standard quality.

Some 40k Grey Knights, the Best We can Paint Them

We did a recent Inquisition Grey Knights order, just a few miniatures but done to our highest level, which is Exhibition Quality. For these that came to $10 per figure.

You will love HATE.

We recently did a some of CMON’s “Hate” miniatures, based on the Adrian Smith comics. I’ve seen a lot of crazy minis in this job, but I haven’t seen anything like these in a long time.

LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE BOSSES.

Normally we split large orders across several painters, to reduce the risk (and impact) of delays. Here however, Vasanth decided it would better if we gave the whole lot to one painter, who has a knack for, well, insane figures. It was a good call: the look and feel are more consistent, and because he could get used to the sculpting style, Sadeep, the painter, got faster towards the end.

New Site!

So we set up a new page for our miniature painting service. This is because:

- Google is ending the Picasa gallery system (where we have thousands of galleries)

- To improve our Google rank ("Figs" is unfortunately not what people Google when they want "miniature painting."

- Squarespace gives us some nice tools to play around with.

We're still doing business under Paintedfigs.com, but increasingly this will be our portal.
