Sri Lankan Protests, 3D Printing Armies, and Terrain for Sale

Economic Protests in Sri Lanka

Thank you to everyone who was written to ask how we are! We are all safe and well.

For those who don’t know, Sri Lanka is going through hard times. They will get worse before IMF reforms begin. However, there were clear warning signs this was coming, and for some time. Many businesses used this time to prepare.

The studio has a 6 months consumables reserve as a buffer against supply chain problems. Our sales are international, so the local downturn doesn’t affect us. The team is also paid against the dollar; this protects them against inflation. Of course, we still run into outlier problems. We manage them as they come.

Overall, I am optimistic. It is at a high cost to the country, but we are getting rid of the most corrupt of our politicians.

3D Printing Your Armies

We have teamed up with an excellent 3D printing outfit on this end. Here are some miniatures, mainly from One Page Rules, which we asked them to print. We undercoated them to better show their detail:

3D Printing Prices

The pricing on these ranged from $3.25 from single-piece prints, to $8.00 for the multi-part terminators. The fewer parts a figure had, the less expensive it was to print.

Here is a breakdown:

Alchemist $3.50
Da Vinci Assasin $3.25
Dwarf Miner $3.25
Dwarf Rune Lord $4.00
Not-Death Korps Guardsman $5.50
Not-Terminator $8.00

If you are interested in having your armies 3D printed on this end, here is what we’ll need:

1 - The files must be pre-supported.

2 - we would need Google Drive link to the files. These we will share with our printer, so they can give an exact quote. Once we have their pricing, we will forward it over.

Once the order is paid, the printer will get to work. Both the printer and us, will QA the figures. Once the army comes up in the queue, it will go into painting.

Goes without saying, but best to say it! We are respecting the license conditions for any .STLs we print.

We will have pictures of these painted up, to show off, soon. For now, I just wanted to give you a teaser.

Any thoughts or questions about this, please feel free. We’re quite pleased to finally be offering clients the option to have their figures manufactured here, reducing their purchasing costs and shipping fees!

OUR OWN Terrain - Hills for Sale!

We are getting into terrain making. Right now we are in the R&D and testing stage but the plan is to produce high-quality terrain for the lowest rates on Earth…

Here is one example, a set of six, small, hills:

This was an R&D set. However, if anyone wants them, you can buy all six hills (the minis not included!), for $72.

If you like what you see, but they’re already sold, just drop us an email and we’ll make you some :) .

We Painted Too Much Blood Bowl!

If there is such a thing as too much Blood Bowl, this must be it. We had the good fortune to land this giant Blood Bowl miniature painting commission.

My favorites are the Snotlings. I have a set of my own I bought just to get the pump wagons (it is the best deal on GW wagons you will find anywhere). That aside, I expect we will be playing Blood Bowl, and Blitz Bowl, soon.

This whole lot was done at Showcase Quality.

Paintedfigs is a commission miniature painting service. You can send us your figurines to paint, and we also have painted miniatures for sale. We paint mainly Games Workshop (Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Age of Sigmar, Necromunda, Space Hulk, Bloodbowl, and so on), Star Wars, Warmachine and Hordes, and pretty much every Kickstarter and board game under the sun.

And we do so at the lowest rates on Earth (we’ve checked).

A Few Soulblight Gravelords

This was part of a skirmish commission. There’s only a few shots to show, but I felt the figures stood out so much I felt we had to blog about them. GW vampires have never looked this good.

One isn’t a vampire at all, however. One is Yvraine, Emissary of Ynnead, but without her headdress and cat.

These were painted to Exhibition quality.

A Marvel Crisis Protocol Miniature Painting Commission

After painting so many Chibi miniatures for Marvel United, it feels strange to see these figures as they are "meant" to be.

Back when Knight models had the franchise to make these, they did excellent work. However, the Marvel Crisis Protocol range is much more flamboyant.

The figures are also more dynamic; their posing seems to suggest they have been snapped from comic book panels. One gets the sense of narrative just from how they are standing.

Another nice difference is the elaborate basing most of these have.

These were painted to Showcase quality.

Painting Kruleboyz? Kruelboys? Kroolbois?

We got to work on a few some Kruleboyz. You be surprised how many different ways that gets spelled…

As others have noted, the figures have a brutality to them that makes incongruous alongside other green skins. However, they have excellent table presence and character. They make terrifying villains / Opposing Forces. I feel they are a high watermark for Games Workshop design, and should not be overlooked.

We will be showing off a large Kruleboyz army, soon.

Here are some pop culture miniatures we got to do. There's Blade Runner; Aliens; Thundarr the Barbarian; and Predator that I can identify (you can’t see the Predator because he’s invisible). Enjoy!

A Middara Miniature Painting Commission

Middara is a Kickstarter a board game with some incredible figures. However, they are bit more challenging to paint than most. The designs are excellent, but the detail can be a little soft in places. This requires a bit more skill to handle.

The bigger problem though, is that the Middara art references tend to look like this:

Pretty cool, but it doesn't really tell you what the figure should look like. You have to fill in the blanks.

Here is how we managed it. This miniature painting commission was done at Showcase quality.

Stormcast Eternals That Are Mostly Toilet Paper (by Weight)

We are working on an interesting order that has pushed us to try new techniques and grow. One such area was crafting bases.

Toilet Paper Bases

You can't sculpt large bases without a material to sculpt with. Everyone likes using Scupltamold but I didn't fancy shipping a 15-pound bag to Sri Lanka at express shipping rates… Everyone also talked about Sculptamold alternatives made from toilet paper and Plaster of Paris combos.

We tried these, but in the end, we got our best results just working with toilet paper, water, and industrial-strength PVA glue. Mix them up, and once the toilet paper has disintegrated, you get a mass that you can work into different shapes. It will hold them.

The only problem is that it takes a great deal of toilet paper. So, for the last ones, we began bulking up bases with chunks of Styrofoam and covered them with the toilet paper makes to give them the shape and texture we wanted.

Colored Flock

We made our own. We dipped some foam in auto paint. Waited for the paint to dry, then threw it in a blender. We then glued it using some PVA.

Bark and Stone

You can see the stones in the bases. What looks better than the stones though, is the bark. Those are the bits of ‘stone’ sticking out that look more dramatic and interesting.

Finding bark was another matter. Sri Lanka is a hot, humid place. There’s lots of tree branches lying around if stop and look. They’re are lots of termites and the two tend to go together. Also, not all bark works the same. Some has more character, some, hardly any.

Verdict: Scratch-Building versus Resin Cast and Printed Bases

Once we figured out how to do these bases we were quite pleased with ourselves. The materials are so inexpensive! Why doesn't everyone do this? Then we saw how long it took.

Crafting is great, and if someone wants us to craft bases for them, we’re happy to. However, there is nothing cost effective about it when you consider the time it takes. As such, it is much cheaper to use manufactured bases and to just paint on their details.

Still, it was an excellent exercise and taught us some tricks we’ll be using for terrain making.

Price Increase for Some Legacy Clients, coming End of April

Most of you have been paying these rates:

Basic Infantry
Standard Quality: $4.80
Showcase Quality: $7.20
Exhibition Quality: $9.60

For you, there is NO price increase. These are what the rates should be. They’ve been our website for about one and half years now.

However, some of you have been paying these slightly lower, preferential rates:

Basic Infantry
Standard Quality: $4.40
Showcase Quality: $6.60
Exhibition Quality: $8.80

These will be stopped, come the end of April.

Different Rates? Why Are There Different Rates?!

My fault. It was an unforeseen problem I created with an AB pricing test. The test was meant to be short, with the new rates rolling out right after, for all clients.

However, once I had the data, I became uncomfortable with the idea of hiking prices on clients who had Corona-delayed orders. At that point, that was everyone. It felt in poor taste.

I figured another couple of months and those delayed orders would be done... however, one Corona-delay led to another, and the delays cascaded. It ended up taking over a year to solve.

Most delayed orders are now complete or completing soon. So, it is now time to finally bring all legacy clients on to the same pricing. I am sorry it has taken so long.

Orange Orruks for Age of Sigmar

Some Sword and Sorcery Ancient Chronicles Painting

We landed a fair-sized Sword and Sorcery: Ancient Chronicles miniature painting commission. Sword and Sorcery has particularly good sculpts, even by board game and Kickstarter standards. Here’s how they came out:

Painting CMON’s Night’s Watch for A Song Of Ice and Fire

Most of our miniature painting commissions involve a lot of colors. Every so often though, we get a job that’s mainly white, grey, or black.

The trick with these is to try and play up whatever color there is. For a gritty palette like the Night’s Watch though, this was out.

What could work with was what’s called ‘value contrast.’ Value is just a fancy way of saying contrast between light and dark. Here, the subject matter (and the client’s request) gave us the fix that was needed. This is was the white snow. Without it, I think these would have been quite lacking.

Converted Thousand Sons and Tzeentch

We’re doing a lot of Thousand Sons painting these days. This order stood out though because the client supplied us with some conversions and alternate models to work with.

An Infinity: Defiance Miniature Painting Commission

Corvus Belli did a large Infinity kickstarter not too long ago. A few clients went all-in and sent the figures over to us to get painted up.

The sculpts were, as usual, quite excellent. What stood out for me though was the Megalodron. It is the largest Infinity figure we’ve yet painted. As far as I understand, they are the largest Infinity figures, ever. I do hope this means that we will see Corvus Belli experiment with other super-large miniatures!

Warhammer 40K Painting Service: Painting Classic Praetorian's

It is not everyday that we see Praetorians. It is not everyday that anyone sees them. If you're wondering, these were created because someone at Games Workshop (when they were more playful company) did a head swaps on the Mordian range using pith helmeted heads. They proved quite popular, and the Praetorians became a thing.

I can't remember the last time we painted the praetorian army - certainly not want this large. We did them as proper redcoats, to Exhibition quality.

As charming as these models are, they are a little tough to work with. The Mordian sculpt and has its challenges. The buttons and the trim around them can be tricky. The faces, too. Most difficult however the epaulets. Some are well sculpted. Others -- not so much. We had to take a bit more time with these.

Praetorians - Today?

You would be hard-pressed to find these models today. However Victoria Miniatures had a go at them. Here are some we did. These were also painting to Exhibition quality:

Sisters of Battle: An Order of the Bloody Rose 40k Painting Commission

Some Sisters of Battle painted up to Exhibition Quality.

I’ve not been fond of the Order of the Bloody Rose color scheme because I feel it needs a bit more green to balance it out. Normally you see green lenses, plasma glow, and instrument panels. These look good - but they are smaller details and therefore painted bright so they stand out. This I find comes off a bit gimmicky.

Here we got to use a bit of dead grass (matching the client’s basing reference). The muted green worked better I feel. It balances out the red and feels more natural.

A Miniature Painting Commission for The Game 'Moonstone'

Moonstone is a fairytale-themed skirmish wargame. Their miniatures are charming, whimsical - and quite excellent. They are well-cast pewter figures and the official artwork for these on their website made painting these a breeze.

These were commissioned at Exhibition Quality.
