Painting a Horde of Exhibition Quality Battletech

This was a fun order. It was a huge number of mechs and we got to go all the way with them. We matched a range of schemes. My favorites are the blue ones.

About Battletech:

BattleTech is a tabletop wargame that simulates combat between giant robots called "BattleMechs." The game was first published in the 1980s by FASA Corporation - with, shall we say, GREAT INSPIRATION drawn from Harmony Gold's Macross/Robotech?

All the new, high-detail hotness for Battletech now is coming from Catalyst Game Labs.

In BattleTech, players control a lance of BattleMechs and engage in combat with their opponents' lances. Each player has a certain number of points to spend on their lance, which they can use to purchase different types of BattleMechs, vehicles, and other support units.

BattleTech is known for its complex gameplay, deep lore, and for getting FASA sued by Harmony Gold. The game has a large and dedicated fan base and has inspired a number of spin-off games and other media. I look forward to Battletech for years to come.

Strike Force Agastus - Look at Those GUNS

I have seen much shade being thrown at the Desolation Marines for their large guns. These were the first though that we’ve seen them ‘in the plastic.’

On seeing them, I think they’re fine. My only concern il that the open flap / lid might break, over time.

It’s been a while since these minis first came out. Their wave came and went — just like Robotech did. It was nice to see them in the studio again and have to teach people about the cartoons.

Painting Green Votann, Red Earth

Some nice, green, Votann. We thought reddish basing would be a nice touch to offset the green, so we pitched it to the client. He liked it, and here we are!

Painting the Darkest Dungeon Boardgame

We paint a lot of weird miniatures. Often though, the follow set, artistic styles. Chibi. Realism. Primaris Tacti-Cool. These miniatures from the Darkest Dungeon board game however, are like nothing we’ve done before.

They are a bit Chibi - but not really. They’re cartoony but in a way that feels unique to them.

Bloodbowl at Exhibition Quality

We got to work on these badass-looking, 3rd party Blood Bowl minis. I love me some goblins, especially Night Goblins. They have charming ridiculousness that plays well to Blood Bowl — the concept of which is ridiculous in and of itself.

A Bit of Necromunda Miniature Painting

Necromunda has come a long way from a few gangs fighting in an undercity. The undercity has become more interesting, an insight, in miniature, to imperial cities. The outside has become a thing. This might seem a departure, but, following inspiration from Mad Max, there had been plans to do an outdoor variant for Necromunda (instead, we got Gorka Morka).

Either way, there is quite a rich and flavorful range to Necromuda now.

Matching a Different Style: Some Unusual (for us) Custodes

We’re happy to match another painter’s color scheme — but very rarely their painting style. This is because painting methods are like languages. I can read a French menu out loud, but if a Frenchman heard me, he’d probably ask me to never do it again….

Everyone’s painting is different. They develop skill in their chosen method. Switching methods won’t give the same results.

So, for this order, I figured “hey! Let’s switch methods. How bad could it be?”

We were sent some minis painted in a fairly different style from how we normally paint. However, the differences seemed incremental, and built on top of the same foundation steps we would have taken. So, in the end, we pulled it off. It was TWICE as much work as we’d bargained on, but we learned another way to paint. That, in itself, is always useful.

There were painted to a level higher than Exhibition, but which costs twice as much.

A Diorama Terrain Exercise

There’s a project we’re working on for which we’ll need to do a lot of terrain and diorama work. The painting is straightforward and we’re quite familiar with terrain.

But dioramas? I didn’t even do those in school…

This was a proof of concept piece. We wanted to see what we could do, and how well we could do it. It’s made of:

• styrofoam (the stuff with balls, not that XPS magic we can’t get out here)

• toilet paper and white glue

• dental plaster casts

• scratch-made flock and clump foliage

• 3d printed components

• two-part resin

Is it great? No. A lot of areas were identified in this exercise for further learning and practice. Is it promising? Very much. We’re doing more pieces (mainly, I’M doing more pieces) to develop this as a skill and see where it takes us. A year from now, who knows? Maybe we’ll be making terrain boards.

Painting Saucy Minis (A Wee Bit NSFW)

As a rule, I underline the amount of GW painting we do. However, that’s usually about 1/2 to 2/3s of it. The remainder can be all sorts of stuff. Sometimes, quite saucy!

These stood out to me because I’m not sure what to make of them. Stormtrooper babes? Darth Valerie? What is the narrative for the turret gunner, and do I want to know?

Painting Mythic Games' Reichbusters

We painted up some Reichbusters: Project Vril recently. I know I say this all the time, but the minis ARE INSANE.

A lot of the time with board games you see great renders. However, the final results may lack detail, or be too small for the amount of they've squeezed in. Not so with these. Even the doors open and close.

Why Black Templars Should Be Blue

Here are a few Black Templars. These were matched to the official artwork - where it was nice to see the armor had been highlighted into a turquoise.

Right from when we started 17 years ago, I have been annoyed at the use of grey to highlight black. It works; but I find it so boring. I have always pushed for blue tones to highlight black, instead.

I'm not alone in thinking this; in fact, I suspect the idea is ancient. Consider this Hindu temple art:

The reason these characters are painted blue is because that's how ancient artists in the Sub Continent learned to portray characters with dark skin.

The immediate question here is why dark dark-skinned people blue and not just dark brown? Any photographer shooting someone with dark skin can tell you. Dark skin is hard to accurately photograph - though apps and iPhones have pretty much fixed this, these days.

What I suspect is that ancient artists also preferred to work with blues to highlight dark skin - and from there, artistic license just took over.

Increasingly over the years, Games Workshop's artists are making the same decision.

This was a large, assorted set of fantasy miniatures. Many of them are townsfolk, but there are some interesting outliers like the Discworld figures and the Reaper cultists. My favorites in this set were the goblins being used for target practice.
