Painting the Kickstarter Board Game Oathsworn

This was our first time working on the Oathsworn Kickstarter board game. The sculpting of the miniatures is excellent. They are also a bit larger than normal. The advantage is that it makes the painting a little easier, though it does also increase the amount of work a bit.

Oathsworn has lots of weapon options for its characters. These need to be swapped in and out. The minis had to be painted in a way that made sure that painted not obstruct this.

A Kruleboyz Army with Marshy Basing

This was one of the most fun projects we've done in a while! In addition to the unusual colour scheme we were asked to match, the client wanted us to up our basing game. He was kind enough to pay for whatever we needed, and this is what we did!

Most of the effects was straightforward. However, the resin had to be applied with a tiny squeeze bottle, to make sure it got into all the hard to reach places. It also had to go down, layer by layer; we couldn't just to a one-off for and be done with it. With drying time, the resin took almost as long to do as the painting. However, the results were delightful.

Some Age of Sigmar Orruks

Another Ork or Orruk project. I’ve heard it said that Space Marines are GW’s most successful product. For us at least, it’s often a close call between Greenskins (of any kind) and Space Marines.

The relatively lighter basing, and the white in the snow, help offset the black.

We painted a Lord of Skulls as a Black Legion Defector

,

For this order, the client wanted his Black Legion to have a dark, almost tired look. Something that captured the idea that they had been at war for a very long time. The usual weathering and corrosion solutions were out; this was not to be a wrecked army, just an old one. Their gear was maintained. Just classic.

We were supplied a sample miniature to work against. Matching the scheme was straightforward, but we needed to play up the contrast where we could, given how dark the scheme was. The solution was to do some very bright edge-highlighting, bring out the bones and teeth, and making the eyes bright yellow.

Something unusual was the Lord of Skulls painted in Black Legion colours. It is however, I feel, quite classy-looking in black.

Here's 4,000 Miniature Painting Commissions We've Done.

Here are (just about!) 4000 gallery thumbnails for all the miniature painting commissions we've done since 2009. That's when we started with Google Photos. Older pictures are lost.

There is a wide range of brands but most of the painting is Warhammer 40k.


How did YOU GET the number 4000?

- We calculated based on the video's speed. Each 1.5 seconds showcases a line of 4 albums.

- At 24 mins and 50 seconds, that comes to 3,973.

- We rounded up to 4000 because the gallery thumbnails don't capture when repeat commissions have their images added to existing albums.


So, Have you Painted 40K, 40K Minis?

Most certainly. Most of our work is 40k. If only 2/3 of the 4000 are 40k commissions, then they only need average 15 minis per commission, to hit 40,000 minis.

That means we’d have hit 40,00 minis if we had just been painting Kill Teams.

A Cthulhu Death May Die Miniature Painting Commission

We paint a lot of Cthulhu Mythos minis but the ones from Cthulhu Death May Die Kickstarter board game are some of the nicest. They have a elegance the early Cthulhu Wars minis don’t have. Some look like they’ve stepped right out of the pages of Chaosium book.

They’re a little smaller than I thought, but otherwise I can find no issue with them. Excellent minis.

We Painted the Solomon Kane Kickstarter Board Game

The minis for the Solomon Kane Kickstarter are incredible. It is a privilege to be sent figures to paint, and I am reminded of this when minis like these turn up.

Some Painted Stargrave: Space Chimpanzees and Dog Merc Men

Stargrave is the Sci-Fi version of the awesome game, Frostgrave. I loved Frostgrave but I didn’t care for its minis. They were well done, but I felt they were outdated-on-arrival.

Stargrave however doesn’t have this problem. It’s minis have the same classic feel, but they just don’t take themselves seriously. The designer(s) are having fun. There’s a dog head. A gribbly head. A chimp head.

An Infinity miniature painting commission we finished up. I’m of two minds about Infinity; the minis are great, but there’s nothing entry-level about painting them. Makes them pricey to work on, but the results end up strong. Good minis paint themselves.

Painting Forge World Resin Death Korps of Krieg

Some Forge World Death Korps of Krieg. The minis have class, but they are showing their age compared to the new plastic ones. I hope we see a redo for the whole range one day, in plastic! They would give the whole Cadian range a run for its money.

Blue Flesh-Eater Courts at Standard Quality

A few Flesh-Eater Courts minis for Age of Sigmar. Something of an unusual scheme so I was a little nervous at first. However, it came together the way it was supposed to.

There's also bit of magenta; and I have been known to do anything for a bit of magenta (except paint professionally).

Some Mansions of Madness Miniature Painting Service

Boardgames come and go. There's often a big flurry of activity (remember Gloomhaven?) And then they dissipate until a new edition comes out.

A Color-Shifting Night Lords Painting Commission

This was a fun project. We were given some color-shifting colors to work with. I was a little nervous because of the gloss, but the effect on the table is quite impressive. The figures draw the eye.

These have skull basing with some crystal formations. The skulls were of course straightforward, but we had to come up with a color for the crystals. We tried green and it worked out.

Painting Iron Warriors Chaos Space Marines

This was a bit of an unusual job. We got it wrong! We are misunderstood instructions and painted the figures as Red Corsairs and Black Legion. So, you can check out the quality of our paint stripping here, as well…

That aside, it was fun to do Iron Warriors. We are not painted them for quite a while. In my mind they had poor table presence, but seeing these finished I could better appreciate the scheme. It feels like it shouldn’t work: silver is neutral and that's most of what you see on Iron Warriors. However, with a few touches, they do come together.

Here we were matching an existing basing scheme. However, if there was leeway to do something different,  I think something with a purple tone might've worked well. It would offset both the gold in the trim, and the yellow markings.

Some Genestealer Cults Miniature Painting Service

We've not done Genestealer Cults in some time. It was a fun to come back to this army, and also to do a fairly large one.

What I like most about the Genestealer Cults is that all figures, from the familiars all the way to the big vehicles, have a lot of unique character. You’re not looking at detail slapped on for the sake of detail. These all came from an interesting and constrained artistic brief. They are great designs.

Painting Kill Team Octarius: Death Korps of Krieg versus Space Ork Kommandos

We got to paint some of the plastic, Kill Team Death Korps of Krieg and Space Ork Kommandos as part of a larger order. Here, I just wanted to focus on the plastics from the Kill Team set (though a commissar sneaked in).

The plastic Death Korps are better models than the older, resin ones from Forge World (or, even, China). If you have an option to purchase between the two, take the plastics. They paint up cleaner and neater, too.

The Space Orks steal the show, however. Why didn’t they just call it Orktarius?

Painting the Norse Blood Bowl Team to Standard Quality

We just finished up painting a set of Blood Bowl Norse from Games Workshop. These figures have a nice balance of detail. We found them straightforward to paint, but with plenty of room to add a bit more pop.

Painting Marvel Crisis Protocol at Standard Quality

I'm always busy showing off our Exhibition and Showcase, so I’m trying to be better about showing off our Standard Quality too. It rocks!
