Eddie. More Eddie. Asylum Eddie.

Wicker Man Eddie.

I was too young to be allowed anywhere near bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and even Metallica, back in their day. Much too Satanic you see! Instead, I became one of Michael Jackson’s adoring young child fans (we all know how well that worked out for the child fans…).

These minis prompted quite a bit of listening to Iron Maiden in the office. I also got myself my own Wicker Man Eddie. It is, as far as I find, the best Wicker Man miniature out there.

Color Shifting 40k Chaos Night Lords

Got to work on reinforcements for these color-shifting Night Lords. The metallic blue has a nice, unusual aspect on the table. Really draws the eye.

We Painted Too Many Necrons!

What’s better than Necrons? Lots of Necrons - all of them done at Exhibition Quality.

It’s great to see how far Necron sculpts have come. The new minis have more character, are more dynamic. Yet, they fit in just fine with the older ones. There’s nothing jarring about mixing them together.

We pushed the green on the vehicles, creating a pseudo-OSL (Object Source Lighting) effect. We weren’t going for OSL. We wanted an exaggerated highlight to give the black areas more character - and to make them look more Necron.

We’ve done Shadows of Brimstone off and on through the years. Here we got to work with all their new sculpts. They’re a nice upgrade in sculpt quality. Flying Frog’s strength I feel has always been their larger minis. With these sculpts they continued to improve their game.

Some Heresy-Era Salamander Space Marines

I think it’s been years since we did Salamanders last. This is the first time ever, as an all-Heresy army.

It was nice to see all the alternate kit, from the Mark III armors all the way to Vulkan. I’m not a huge fan of the Forgeworld primarchs but their Vulkan is impressive. We cracked out the freehand on the Landraider.

The Leagues of Votann, Painted at Showcase

Another month, another Votann army!

This job stood out for two reasons. One, we weren’t sure what the scheme was going to look like till the sample min was painted. The client had given us a clear list of colors to use, and instructions for what went where. We were pleased how it came together, but had to check it was what was wanted (it was).

The other was that the basing was inspired by the walls of Byzantium:

HATE loves Oil Washes - Exhibition Painting with Oils

I’ve shown you HATE painting before, but this time we used oil washes. We’ve experimented with oil washes for some time now. Recently, we rolled them out to all the Exhibition-level painters. Oil wash use is case by case. It depends on the mini, and where an oil wash would improve results. It’s left to the individual painter to decide their use.

Oil washes were used on all these HATE* minis. It gives their shading a greater depth. It worked will for ageing and weathering the metals and fabrics.

Dungeon Degenerates: Tripping on LSD in the 1970s

The minis for Dungeon Degenerates are inspired by 1970s cartoons. I might have seen a handful of those in the ‘80s. I would have thought them mad (I was very proper, even as a child).

Now, however, they are an alien landscape and that means they should be explored. I’m happy we got to work with this unusual palette. These were done to Exhibition Quality, which played well to the neon-bright colors of the schemes.

I’m going to paint some Skaven this way - for Mordheim. There’d be no hiding in the ruins with them, but I’ve never won a game of Mordheim, anyway. May as well rock the painting!

Painting Oathsworn at Exhibition

Just finished a nice big Oathsworn job.

Oathsworn is nice to work on because the figures are a little ‘oversized.’ The advantage here is that the painter is given plenty of space to do all the little details you’ll now find on any good quality, digitally designed mini.

This is in contrast to what you often find with Kickstarter minis - where the figures have comparable detail, but the minis are too small (budget concerns?) to accommodate so many features and still have crisp detail comparable with hard plastic multi-part kits.

Some Blue and Red Tau with Cork Basing

We do Tau Kill Teams every so often, but this was the first fair-sized Tau force we’ve done in a while, at above Standard Quality. I feel the red and the blue came together well.

Basing happened at the end, the client opted for a cork base look with some tufts. Basing on a mini is getting a model to wear a formal suit. Makes all the difference.

We Took Our Best Freehand Painting to Lanka Comic Con

We paint minis from all eras and IPs, but we’ve never done anything directly relevant to our history or mythology, as Sri Lankans. This year, we fixed that.

We got hold of some 15mm Classical Indians from Museum Miniatures in the UK. Museum Miniatures is run by an awesome chap named Dave. As far I have been able to tell over the past few years, Dave has been trailblazing 3d design in the generally older, more traditional world of 15mm historical miniatures. Many people aren’t excited about 15mm, historicals in particular, saying that the minis are dated or ugly. Well, you won’t say that after you’ve held one of Dave’s castings in your hand. Their sculpting is as good as the best 28-32mm.

how to paint south asian war ELEPHANTS

Elephants were the centerpieces of ancient South Asian warfare. There is poor data on how they looked in battle, but the clues are all around us in this part of the world. In Sri Lanka, we have elephant parades called peraheras. Here’s one, from last week, where an elephant went on a rampage:

As you can see from the angry megafauna who ought not to stressed out like this, they wear colorful caparisons. Each one has its own colors. It is very reminiscent of the colors of medieval knights. Correlation isn’t evidence, but it does suggest a similar institution. Sri Lankan perahera elephants are usually done in red, blues, and yellows, and so we used those colors for the Sri Lankan elephants.

Similarly, in India, there are elephant festivals as well. There, however, you see much more use of greens, pinks, and purples, and painting done directly on the elephant’s skin. We used these elements to do the opposing army. For Sri Lankans, Indians have been the OPFOR for much of our history, most recently, in a polite invasion in 1987…

a 650 year old temple

For inspiration for the freehand designs, we went to Embakke, a 650 year old temple. Embakke is interesting for two reasons. One, for centuries after, Singhalese Sri Lankan architecture and design have copied from it. Two, there is no repetition of designs at the temple. Between decorations and imagery, there are 514 unique art pieces there. These art pieces we used for inspiration.

Here are the freehand painted designs. Remember, these guys are about one and a half inches tall.

A 32 square Foot Diorama

Can’t have minis without a board. Can’t just be any board; needs to be fancy if its going to our Comic Con. Here’s what we did:

Sisters of Battle: A Novitiate Kill Team

It was quite a bit of good fortune landing this Kill Team commission. The client wanted a conversion done with some Stormcast heads. Further, he had an excellent scheme he wanted us to do. Last, he sent us some lovely and unusual temple bases to work with. Painted up, they are nice contrast with the paint jobs.

Too Many Gloomspite Gitz! A Large Night Goblin Army at Exhibition Quality

One of my favorite armies are the Night Goblins. They’re mad, charming, cute, murderous. We’ve done them more than a few times. However, this was the first time we were to paint an entire horde army of them as Exhibition Quality - even the regular spear gobbos.

We did some oil washing on these to help bring out the recesses. Some freehand was needed to sort the banners. The basing was straightforward but the client wanted some fancy swamp basing for the centerpiece minis. You’ll notice mushrooms on their bases - some of them we made, using hot glue and toothpicks!
