| The painting was pretty straight forward. Flesh - Bronze Flesh, Elf Flesh, Skull White, Flesh Wash Bronze - Brazen Brass, Shining Gold, Brown Ink Capes - Red Gore, Chaos Black, Blood Red Black Bits - Chaos Black, Shadow Grey Basing - Scorched Brown, Graveyard Earth, Kommando Khaki, dash of static grass To create smoother transitions we do a lot of blending between colors, for example we did the flesh this way: Bronze Flesh basecoat Flesh Wash wash Bronze Flesh/Elf Flesh drybrush, 1:1 Elf Flesh drybrush Elf Flesh/Skull White drybrush, 2:1 The only thing that has been tricky have been the eyes, recessed inside the helmets. Most of the eyes on the first batches were rejected, but now they've got the hang of them. One of the challenges when working with a lot of painters is that it's not enough to tell one person how to do something, you need to make sure everyone involved knows, and understands. Then the harder bit - you have to go back and make sure that they know, and that they are indeed doing it. Working with more experienced staff is always easier -- they know more about painting, understand how we do things, and they are usually the ones coming up with the solutions. The junior staff are much more of a challenge and you can never do enough training. I feel most people don't take basing seriously enough, it either makes or breaks a miniature. Rather than green flock and a goblin green trim, I prefer using real dirt for the flocking (it's more realistic looking than dirt flock), painting it in three colors, and then added some tufts of static grass if appropriate. On larger bases we'll add some small, Woodland scenics bushes. The basing style of course depends on the theme of the minis. |
